SARIKEI: Muhaizam and Usup Untung defeated Azahari and Drahman in the final to emerge Open category champions of the Sarikei Division Bumiputra Badminton Championship at Dewan Mesyarakat on Sunday.The pair brought home RM500 and champion trophy while Azahari and Drahman received RM300.In the Veteran Open category, Havit and Jawawi emerged champions to win RM300 and trophy after defeating Yahya and Mat Nor who won RM200.Association chairman Ahmad Adai who is also head of Sarikei Division Special Affairs Department officiated at the closing cum prize presentation ceremony of the two-day event.Ahmad thanked the players for their active involvement in the two-day tournament that attracted potential players from other divisions.“I am pleased of the good response and involvement shown by the competitors who displayed good sportsmanship and cooperation that ensured the overall success of the whole event,” he said.He said the participation of outside players would spur the locals to perform better in future championship, adding that stiff competition in the event would produce potential and quality local players, besides giving them a lot of valuable experience and skills.
